Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers turned down the notion that the Reds inability to compete with Tottenham Hotspur on financial front led to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s signing by the latter, insisting that they are willing to spend on players they deem fit
for the club.
The Icelandic International was heavily linked to reunite with his former boss, Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, after the Reds reportedly made overtures for the player to sign him from Hoffenheim. However, Sigurdsson opted to move to White Hart Lane, triggering
a debate that Liverpool’s incapacity to offer him a lucrative deal was the reason behind the the move failing to transpire.
However, Rodgers rubbished the idea that the Merseyside club cannot compete with the top flight clubs on financial grounds, by claiming that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 are willing to spend lavishly for targets they believe will boost the club’s position.
He explained that he reached to an agreement with Sigurdsson on a much lower wage when he was in charge of Swansea, and their decision not to stretch the offer even further was not an indication of their financial fragility.
“We didn't lose out [on Sigurdsson] because of not wanting to spend the money, we lost out because the manager was not prepared to move [on a wage increase].”
The Northern Irishman recently stepped up his summer transfer activities, with some reports suggesting him to be close to signing a couple of players by the end of the week.
However, Rodgers revealed that choosing which players to sign was not as easy as it looked, as a manager has to go through a painstaking exercise of carefully scrutinizing all what a player can offer in short and long term. At the same time the manager also
has to keep in view his compatibility with the current squad.
“You have to ensure those players have the capacity and capabilities to achieve that and that is something which is a part of our recruitment strategy in relation to bringing a player in.”
He further added that a chance of representing Liverpool comes with a huge responsibility to meet the exceptionally high standards of the Merseyside club, and divulged that he expects all his players to act as thorough professionals on and off the field.
