Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers revealed that he was under no illusions whatsoever about the challenges that lay ahead of him, as he sets out to reverse the doleful situation at Anfield.
The Northern Irishman took over the reins of the Merseyside club at a time when the Reds were arguably experiencing one of their worst spells in history.
Having failed to feature in Champions League football during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 plummeted further down the table in the previous term. They finished eighth in the final league standings to miss out on the coveted European event for
the third consecutive season.
Their underachieving campaign was in sharp contrast to their illustrious history, which saw them lift the league title on 18 occasions and win the European Cup 5 times.
Having taken over the Anfield management amid sky high expectations and the owners’ stiff target of securing a top-four finish, Rodgers divulged that he was aware of the daunting task which lay ahead of him, but was optimistic that the Reds will be able
to rediscover their lost glory in the near future.
While talking to reporters, he said: “We have to recognise the challenge is immense - let’s be under no illusion about that… I genuinely think a club of our status and value to the football world, we can go again. But it’s going to take time.”
The 39-year old also caste light onto the fact that people were quick on citing the Reds shortcomings over the last couple of years, overlooking what they managed to achieve in the past.
Liverpool are set to play a couple of friendly games by the end of July, before starting their 2012/13 campaign against West Bromwich Albion on the 18th of August. Currently, the former Swansea boss is working with the squad at the Melwood training
ground.
When asked about his aims and targets for the future, Rodgers responded by saying that he will give it his best to successfully implement his playing philosophy at the Merseyside club, and was optimistic about meeting his goals.
“One thing I can assure the fans though, I’m going to fight for my life – to try to get this model of play that hopefully can change the history of the club.”
