Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, has termed the task of helping the Reds secure a top-four berth this season as a ‘massive’ one, but was unwilling to step away from the challenge.
The Merseyside outfit are currently stuttering in the worse half of the table after 14 matches, having collected just 16 points. They are just 4 points clear of safety and lag behind fourth-placed West Bromwich Albion by 10.
During this period, the team have just grinded out 3 wins, suffered 4 losses and played out 7 draws.
What is even more worrisome for the new manager at the helm is that his side are yet to assert their dominance at home, and have been over-reliant on their ace striker, Luis Suarez.
Nonetheless, the 39-year old confessed that the Reds might fail to end up inside the top four this campaign. He insisted that the team have shown marked improvement over the last couple of months, and feels that the arrival of January reinforcements could
enable them to mount a strong finish.
Earlier, Rodgers had said improving on Liverpool’s eighth-place finish last season would reflect a successful campaign.
“Let's be honest, it is a big ask to make the top four, a massive ask. But that has to be our target. I have seen enough from this team to make me believe we are still on track,” he told the reporters.
“Our objective in the first six months was to hang onto the coattails of the top teams and give ourselves a fighting chance.”
The manager also bemoaned the Anfield outfit’s wastefulness in front of goal. He claimed that his side have been impressive defensively and played good attacking football at the heart of the field. However, he wants them to be more clinical in the final
quarter and feels that problem will be solved after the January window.
“We just need to be a bit more clinical to finish off that good work, and if we can find the right profile of players in January, we can go on a great run,” he added.
