Rodgers calls plays, Flynn breaks record in Packers win over Lions - NFL News
Aaron Rodgers is not only a great quarterback but he can become a good offensive coordinator too and he showed it while calling plays during the first half of this week’s encounter against Detroit Lions.
"We went no-huddle exclusively in the first half, and Aaron Rodgers called it over the headsets -- the whole first half," Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I wanted him mentally into this game, prepared and able to operate as if he was playing."
Replacement quarterback Matt Flynn seems to have taken full advantage of learning from Rodgers and showed it as he had a record game passing for six touchdowns. Flynn broke the record for the highest number of passing touchdowns by any quarterback in a single
game with his six against the Lions. That number hasn’t been reached even by some of the best in the National Football League including the likes of Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady etc.
The quarterback also covered 480 passing yards during the game in an exceptional performance that really showed the strength in depth the Packers had. Coach Mike McCarthy was full of praise for Flynn who started just his second game as a Packer this week.
"I can't say enough about Matt Flynn. The whole world got to see what we see everyday."
The Packers were playing a second string side against the Lions as they rested some of their key players ahead of the playoffs. However, the Lions were not able to defeat even this Packers side losing 45-41 in an exciting encounter that went back and forth
until Flynn won it for the Packers with a four-yard pass to Jermichael Finley.
Flynn was thankful to Rodgers for helping him come up with one of the best quarterback performances ever. Flynn said that he was with Rodgers throughout the preparations for the game discussing plays and situations to defeat the Lions. He also spent time
with Rodgers before the game learning the plays and discussing tactics.
Flynn’s contract runs out at the end of the season and many franchises after this performance will be looking to sign the quarterback up but Flynn is not thinking about those possibilities just yet.
"I'm not thinking about that right now," Flynn said, "but a lot of guys are jumping on my back, trying to be goofy and say things like that. But there's a lot ahead of this team still."
The Packers are the National Football Conference’s first seed and have a first week bye. They will face the winners of the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions game in the division round of the playoffs.
