The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 boss has played down the notion that the Reds will go on a spending spree in January in order to bolster the squad.
The Reds have struggled with their attacking options thus far this campaign, after experiencing an unsuccessful summer transfer business. Clint Dempsey, who was then reported to be favouring a move to Anfield, decided to move to Tottenham Hotspur at the
eleventh hour, leaving Rodgers with just two attackers in Luis Suarez and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-Borini-c13163.
The situation only exacerbated for the Merseyside outfit, as Borini fractured his ankle and was consequently ruled out from playing till at least January.
Liverpool’s lack of penetration upfront has been badly exposed, as the team have struggled, time and again, to find the back of the net despite creating myriad opportunities. It has led many into believing that the owners will loosen the purse strings in
January in order to land some quality strikers.
However, Rodgers moved to dispel such rumours. In fact, the Northern Irishman revealed that the club were being run on a slim budget at the moment.
He said that he had an understanding with the owners that Liverpool will spend openly in the coming summer, and that for now, he only plans on adding a couple of players to his squad.
“We won't be overly busy in January but some reinforcements will be nice, just the addition of some firepower to help us at the top end of the field,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“The budget was going to be tight this year, for a number of reasons, but we will be doing something because it is the need of the group.”
“From next season the purse strings should loosen a bit more but, in terms of this season, it was always on the understanding it was going to be tight in terms of finance.”
The Fenway Sports Group, the parent company of Liverpool, has spent more than 100 million pounds since taking over the ownership of the Merseyside club. However, the failure of some expensive signings to deliver, most notably Andy Carroll and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221,
has made the American-based company a bit reluctant lately to spend over the top for new players.
