The Liverpool manager has admitted that he expects to follow the Borussia Dortmund model to reach the heights of success
Brendan Rodgers has admitted that his side is in a transition phase and it will take some time to reach the heights of success. He stated that there are a lot of young players in the squad which is a great thing for the team.
The former Swansea City manager added that he takes inspiration from the model Borussia Dortmund have followed over the past few years. He stated that the German side suffered financially after winning the UEFA Champions League
in 1997 but they focused on young players and are reaping the benefits now.
Rodgers added that Dortmund have now won two league titles in the last three years and have reached the semi-final of the Champions League this term where they will face Real Madrid over two legs.
The tactician stated that you do not always have to spend huge sums in the transfer window to win league titles and achieve success in European competitions. He claimed that Dortmund is a prime example in this case.
“You can challenge without spending £80m in one summer. Look at the example of Borussia Dortmund, a team that won the Champions League and then struggled financially. They went out and rebuilt and it took them four to five years
to push on. That's a team that has been growing over five years,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, he stressed that you need to have a financial ability as the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have to buy players for huge sums. He stated that if any club does not have the financial ability such as City

“Unless you have got the Manchester City or Chelsea money and just bring in £70m-£80m worth in one summer to add to a Champions League-winning group, you need a different way,” he concluded.
