Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, fulminated against the match referee Phil Dowd, describing his performance as ‘embarrassing’, in his side’s 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.
The Reds looked the more dominant of the two teams for majority of the game, but a slack start allowed the hosts to open up a two-goal lead inside the first 16 minutes.
However, the Anfield outfit could have grabbed at least a point had some decisions gone in their favour. Steven Gerrard was clearly pushed inside the box by Mousa Dembele, but Dowd didn’t see it that way.
Luis Suarez then took a knock from Gallas which could easily have drawn a penalty kick. But much to the frustration and disbelief of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 players, the referee waved play on.
The defeat snapped the visitors’ eight match unbeaten streak in the league and kept them entrenched in the bottom half of the table.
On the other hand, the win elevated Villas Boas’ unit above http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 to the fifth place. They are now three points behind fourth-ranked West Bromwich Albion.
Nonetheless, the Anfield chief believes that his side were being hard done by poor refereeing on Wednesday.
He lambasted the match officials for denying his side a couple of penalties and also insisted that the hosts’ second goal came under dubious circumstances.
“We never got the rub of the green. It was a little embarrassing,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“[We had] two clear penalties. [Dembele] on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/William-Gallas-c36874.”
“Then, for the second [Tottenham] goal, the player dived. Clint Dempsey falls over without any contact. So, everything that went against us.”
Although the Reds came out empty handed, yet again, from their visit of White Hart Lane, the Ulsterman claimed that his side could not have put up a better show.
He also bemoaned their slow start to the match, pointing out that it was always going to be difficult to overcome the deficit against a team like Tottenham.
