The English International, who has represented no other club than Liverpool in his career, will see his contract get expired by the end of the 2013/14 season.
However, the Anfield chief is unwilling to let go of him despite his old age, as he claims that there is still a lot the 32-year old could offer to the Reds.
Gerrard made his first-team debut back in November, 1998. Since then, he has gone on to represent the Reds in an astounding 609 matches in all competitions, hitting the back of the net 153 times during this period.
During his career, he has won scores of accolades. He has claimed the Player of the Month award on 5 occasions, while securing the Ballon d’Or Bronze laurel in 2005.
Besides that, he led Liverpool to a memorable Champions League triumph in 2005, and was also a part of the FA Cup winning squads in 2001 and 2006.
Keeping in view the midfielder’s meritorious services for Liverpool and the desire to play for many more years to come, Rodgers revealed that he plans on extending the player’s stay at Anfield.
The Ulsterman said that Gerrard was still one of the top performers in the Premier League, and that he was an important part of the Anfied revolution that he is looking to bring about.
“Steven is vital to us and I recognise that. I know he has 18 months left on his contract but I would want him to go beyond that for this club and this team. What I would say with Steven is he has a real hunger to succeed,” he told the reporters.
“This is a guy who has led his life right as a football player and that allows you to play well into your 30s. I would want him to stay beyond his current contract and extend it.”
The Reds skipper struggled in the preliminary stages of the season to make an impact, but has shown gradual improvement ever since. On Saturday, he notched up his third league goal of the campaign to fashion his side’s comprehensive 4-0 win over Fulham.
