Rodionova Sisters rally past Marosi/Woerle to reach quarters – e-Boks Open 2012
Second seeded Rodionova Sisters, Anastasia and Arina, tumbled over the Hungarian-German tandem, Katalin Marosi and Kathrin Woerle, in a three set nail-biter at the e-Boks Open 2012 on Monday. They formulated a 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 victory against their opponents to secure a place in the final eight at this WTA International level tournament held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Russian born sisters displayed tremendous skills to take down their rivals in one hour and 13 minutes. They swayed from their path in the second set but pulled out the victory after ruling the super tie-breaker.
Anastasia and Arina thundered into the Farum Arena and after blasting powerful groundstrokes, they winded up the opening five games in a row before the Hungarian-German tandem could hold on. Despite squandering their chance of pulling out the opener with a breadstick, the ultra-fit sisters broke their opponent’s serve once more and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Hungarian-German junction on the other side of net bounced back in the game. They earned the desiderated break in the opening game and quickly leaped to a 2-0 lead. Marosi and Woerle then maintained consistency in their game and not only swiped in their entire serves but cashed in their second break opportunity in the seventh game to seal the equaliser with a 6-2 win.
With the match now poised on a knife edge, it was Anastasia and Arina who would re-ignite their earlier spark and take the early ascendancy. They cruised to a 5-2 lead before clinching the decider with an 11-9 score line.
Overall, the high flying Rodionova Sisters ruled throughout the match. They clobbered a better first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 61 per cent and amazingly clicked 23 out of 37 points on it. Anastasia and Arina also brushed off five out of eight breakpoints they came across and capitalised on three out of 10 break opportunities to earn the glory.
Next up for the seeded duo is the Swedish-German collaboration of Johanna Larsson and Jasmin Wohr who eased past local wild card entrants, Malou Ejdesgaard and Caroline Wozniacki, in straight sets to set-up this clash.
