Cave Story dev, Tyrone Rodriguez, verbally assaults Kojima claiming that the iconic developer is “terrible at making games”. Cue raised eyebrows and gasps.
Hideo Kojima is one of the most respected individuals in the video game industry, which is largely down to his work on the legendary Metal Gear Solid series. The series has evolved from its ambitious beginnings on the PlayStation One to pushing the limits of the PlayStation 2, before the masterpiece that is Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PlayStation 3 console.
Each game has received near perfect review scores and have rarely failed to disappoint fans, always giving them one reason or the other to praise each title. His development process is also slightly different.
Kojima expects one new idea from every member of his staff on a daily basis in what can only be termed as ‘mass brainstorming’. Ideas such as peeking around cover and other subtle things that make the games so immersive have come out as a result of this.
However, despite his status among the gaming community Kojima was recently criticised by a fellow developer. According to Tyrone Rodriguez, Nicalis’ producer and former EIC at IGN, “He’s (Kojima) terrible at making games. Metal Gear is good in spite of him. I haven’t enjoyed a game of his since maybe the original Metal Gear Solid games, maybe.”
It was an interesting statement that came completely out of the blue and whatever resentment Mr. Rodriguez is harbouring against Kojima, well, it seems to be deep rooted.
He continued his rant by highlighting how he hated the fact that everyone seemed to want to be labelled indie developers.
He said, “The main thing I want to see from indie developers is to stop calling themselves indie developers. You’re either a game developer or you’re not. Indie has nothing to do with it. It’s like this cool buzzword now. Do you make games? Okay, then you’re a game developer.”
At least, the developer did have a few compliments to offer titles such as Demon’s Souls, The World Ends with you and Street Fighter IV.
