Former Newcastle United defender Glenn Roeder thinks that England striker Andy Carroll will fluster defences in the European Championships, and the manager Roy Hodgson can make best use of him by employing an appropriate strategy.
The 56-year old, who capped 193 appearances for the Magpies, voiced his opinion in view of Carroll’s scintillating run, near the end of the season for Liverpool last season and his impressive show for the Three Lions in a friendly match against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Norway-c2974 on
Saturday.
According to reports, Hodgson has earmarked the famous number 9 jersey for the in-form striker, with the fans and the media also setting high expectations with him to play the leading role in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749’s bid to end their major cup hoodoo.
Nevertheless, Roeder felt that England needs to adopt a ploy best suited to Carroll’s strengths in order to reap maximum benefit from the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809-player.
While talking to reporters, he said: “Roy won’t need telling this and I would assume that he would have selected him with this in mind but you have to play to Andy’s strengths to get the best out of him.”
The Englishman pointed out that Carroll is currently the best player in the Premier League when it comes to playing the ball in the air. He threw a word of caution towards Hodgson that the policy of excessive passing and retaining possession in the midfield,
instead of playing crosses to the burly striker can shatter his confidence and render his presence in the squad in vain.
He added, “I’m not saying he can’t fit into those tactics adequately but it is not his strength. His strength is attacking those crosses in the penalty box.”
Roeder also admitted that Carroll had so far failed to establish himself at Liverpool, but felt that at 23 years of age he has got ample time to make adjustments, and has got an opportunity to make a point ahead of the next season by coming up good in the
European Championships.
He added, “He will have to work with a new manager next season and in between times he has an opportunity at the Euros to really impress on the international stage.”
