Roethlisberger steers Steelers to 13-9 victory against Chiefs – NFL Recap Week 12
Four turnovers by Kansas City Chiefs provided the Pittsburgh Steelers with the opportunity to score a 13-9 victory in their Week 12 game on Sunday.
The Steelers chose to move ahead with the injured Ben Roethlisberger and it paid them well. Weslye Saunders scored a touchdown on a 2 yard pass thrown by Roethlisberger in the second quarter. That was the only touchdown of the
game and it enabled the Steelers to maintain a lead for the rest of the game. Roethlisberger completed 21 of 31 passes for 193 yards and had one interception.
"They're a good football team, good defence. It's tough because it's a mixed feeling type of thing: You're happy to get the win, but you're disappointed the way the offense played. The defence stepped up huge today." Roethlisberger
said.
Steelers’ defence did well to prevent a touchdown by the Chiefs despite having lost safety Troy Polamalu, who sustained a head injury in the first quarter. The defence managed three interceptions and a snap from the Chiefs in the
game.
Kansas City managed to take the lead in the first quarter with a 41 yard field goal by Ryan Succop. The Steelers were unable to score in the first quarter but struck back with a field goal and a touchdown in the second quarter
to take the lead 10-3. Shaun Suisham shot a 21 yard field goal to equal the score while a 2 yard touchdown pass by Roethlisberger to Weslye Saunders left the Chiefs trailing for the remainder of the game.
At one time, hopes looked bright for the Chiefs as Ryan Succop scored another field goal of 49 yards. However that was soon overshadowed by Shaun Suisham’s second field goal of 49 yards that increased Pittsburgh’s lead to 13-6.
The last quarter saw the Chiefs struggling for points but all that they could manage was yet another 40 yard field goal by Ryan Succop. Over seven minutes were still remaining in the game. However the struggling Chiefs were unable
to score.
Chiefs quarterback Tyler Palko in his second starter could not fare well. With three interceptions that included a fumble, Palko finished with 167 yards and completed 18 of 28 passes. Palko had been given the second chance as Matt
Cassel was injured and could not make it to the game.
Kyle Orton claimed by the Chiefs did not play in the game even though he did practice for once after his arrival on Friday.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley did not have a good night as he saw his team being routed.
"In the end we had a chance there, moving the ball across the 50 and into their territory. When you turn the ball over four times you generally don't have a chance in the end." Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said.
