Roger Attfield’s lot did not disappoint him in the Woodbine Mile, Northern Dancer and the Canadian Stakes on 18 September at Woodbine
On a day which wasn’t too kind on Canadian based horses, and at the end of the day there was nothing to show on the winning column, one man walked out with a smile on his face. Trainer Roger Attfield sent out three runners on 18 September, 2011, for different
races, and his runners turned in good performances as well as good money.
In the Grade 1 Northern Dancer at Woodbine on 18 September, trainer Roger Attfield sent out the 6-year-old horse Simmard, who ran a powerful race, but was denied a win by Wigmore Hall over a distance of 1 ½ miles on grass.
The sun of Dixieland Band, out of Dibs by Spectacular Bid, Simmard picked up second money in the $100,000 event.
The 4-year-old filly, Perfect Shirl, was also sent by Roger Attfield to run in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes on grass over a distance of 1 1/8 miles at Woodbine.
It was a second grade 2 win for the Canadian Stakes winner, Never Retreat, who smartly kept PERFECT Shirl at bay in the final yards of the race.
The daughter of Perfect Soul, out of Lady Shirl by Thats A Nice, Perfect Shirl rolled in second place in the Canadian Stakes, turning in $60,000 for the second place finish.
In the year 2011, Perfect Shirl has gone on to participate in 6 races altogether, and she has won none, but finished on the money 4 times out of 6 starts.
Trainer Roger Attfield also sent off the 4-year-old colt Hollinger, who was the one of two horses whom the trainer saddles for the Woodbine Mile.
Owned and bred by A. Wortzman and R. Harvey Wortzman, Hollinger finished eighth in the Woodbine Mile, but he was beaten by just 3 ½ lengths.
Roger Attfield is delighted by Hollinger’s performance, because he jumped him into a pretty tough company, and with the run everyone witnessed in the Woodbine Mile, is enough to convince trainer Roger Attfield that the colt is back on track.
It was a pretty good weekend for Roger Attfield, as he picked a lot of positives on his runners and one would assume that he will use them to build on for the future.
