Roger Chapman aims senior majors’ Grand Slam
Roger Chapman from England turned professional in 1981 and earned his fourth career victory in the form of 2012 Senior PGA Championship, a major championship on the 50-and-over tour.
Within less than two months, he won the US Senior Open, another senior major title, and became only the fourth player to win both the majors in a single year. The other three are, Jack Nіcklaus, Gary Player and Hаle Irwin.
“There are only three other guys that have done a double with the US Senior PGA and the US Senior Open in the same season. And to follow in Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Hale Irwin's footsteps is a true honour,” the five-time professional winner said.
Player is the only one so far to complete the Grand Slam of all major wins in a single year — he won each of the 1988 US Senior PGA, 1988 The Senior Open Championship and the 1988 US Senior Open.
This time, Chapman has the same target in front of him and the same venue where Player completed his Grand Slam - Turnberry (Ailsa Course), Turnberry, Scotland.
While talking to the European Tour website, he told that he has not been able to come out of his major championship victories yet. However, he does understand the value of three major victories in a single year and is well prepared for that.
According to him, the major championships on both the regular and over-50 tours have the same value and prestige. Therefore, he does not want to miss the opportunity of repeating his past major performances in Turnberry.
“To win any championship, whether it be a regular Tour event or a Senior Major, you have to have that consistency,” he said. “I’m just really looking forward to Turnberry right now”.
He now looks quite confident while heading for the third senior major event of the year, as he believes that he can display another good four rounds despite the fact that the course is located on seaside.
“I’ve played in The Open Championship 17 times during my career and I’m quite comfortable playing seaside golf,” he said.
