Roger Chapman set to defend US Senior Open Championship title – Golf news
Double Senior Major winner Roger Chapman is set to defend his title at the US Senior Open Championship when he tees off this week at the Omaha Country Club, on Thursday, July 11, 2013.
Last year, Chapman enjoyed major form of his career, as he won US Senior Open Championship at the Indianwood Golf and Country Club right after six weeks of his maiden senior major victory at the US Senior PGA Championship.
After winning the US Senior PGA Championship, many believed that it was just a one-hit wonder. However, Chapman proved everyone wrong by posting an amazing 66 in the final round to overhaul Germany’s Bernhard Langer and claimed the US Senior Open.
“It was probably the best round of golf I’ve played under that amount of pressure,” said the 54 year old. “I was in the second to last group out and Bernhard was behind me. ...All of a sudden four-shot lead had gone to one. My eyes lit up. And I am sure
everyone else’s eyes lit up because it was game on then.”
“I just played steady golf, hitting the fairways and knocking it on the green,” he added. “I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t a one-hit wonder. To win one six weeks later is fairytale stuff.”
He is now really confident to successfully defend his title by repeating the heroics that also allowed him to seal the European Senior Tour Order of Merit last year.
Colin Montgomerie, who recently turned 50 and became eligible to play on the Senior Tour, is relishing the opportunity to make his debut in one of the prestigious 50-and-over events.
He is paired with the 2014 Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer, who will be trying his best to record his second win in the event, having recorded a victory in the 2010 edition.
Paul Wesselingh, who won the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open last week, is also set to be featured in the event, in a bid to secure the first senior major of his career.
The winner of the 2011 John Jacobs Trophy Peter Fowler and Englishman Barry Lane are also listed among the players who will tee off in the event this week.
