Roger Chapman set to defend his title at the US Senior PGA Championship – Golf news
The 2013 European Senior Tour is ready to make its start with this week’s US Senior PGA Championship, where Roger Chapman will try to defend his title.
This is the same tournament that saw Chapman begin his fairy-tale 2012 season. He followed his victory in the tournament by winning the 2012 US Senior Open and took home the John Jacobs Trophy at the end of the season.
The victory in the US Senior PGA Championship made him the first European player in the history to win the tournament, since Jock Hutchison did the same in 1947.
In addition to that, he joined the league of Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin, who won both the US Senior PGA Championship and the US Senior Open in the same year.
“The year 2012 was a special year for my family and for me,” said Chapman. “I went to Benton Harbor with no thoughts about winning the event. It was just a wonderful experience. Then to come back and win the US Senior Open at another wonderful course – Indianwood
– a few weeks later was very special to me as well. It proved I wasn’t a one-time wonder.”
He now has the opportunity add another feat to his name, by successfully defending his title – Irwin was the last man who won the US Senior PGA Championship consecutive two times in 1997 and 1998.
The former Masters champion Bernhard Langer, in the meantime, is also set to add the prestigious title to his resume, as he is currently enjoying a decent form – last month, he successfully made the cut at the Augusta National.
In 2010, the American star won both the Senior Open Championship and US Senior Open in consecutive weeks. However, he still has to prove his supreme power at the US Senior PGA Championship.
The Managing Director of the European Senior Tour Andy Stubbs also expressed his pleasure in featuring some of the best players from the European Senior Tour, as well as from the Champions Tour.
“With such a significant number of European Senior Tour Members participating in the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, our hopes are high for one of them to emulate the remarkable achievement of Roger Chapman in 2012,” he said.
The tournament is set to begin at the Bellerive Country Club, from May 23 to May 26, 2013.
