Roger Cup 2010: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer might meet up in the final
With Rogers Cup 2010 about to start, predictions of Nadal and Federer meeting in the final battle are further enhanced by the main draw of the event at York University.
The Spaniard is currently the top ranked tennis player in the world however, the Swiss tennis maestro Federer has dropped down in rankings to number three in the world which opened up the prospects that the semi final of the Roger Cup 2010 will probably feature both of them as compared to the final battle.
However, at an official draw yesterday, the luck supported the third ranked Swiss as compared to the fourth ranked Murray to get into the category that did not feature Rafa. Therefore, according to some of the experts, Andy Murray who is the defending champ might face head to head with Nadal in the semi final round instead.
As far as Federer and Nadal are concerned, both of them have captured a total of two Roger Cup trophies so far in their career. However, in face to face clashes, Rafa has succeeded on a total of fourteen occasions out of the twenty one encounters. Rafa was a seventeen years old new comer when he knocked down the Swiss tennis master Roger Federer at the Sony Ericsson Open competition right after Roger reached the top of world rankings. Federer has enjoyed his top rankings for as long as a total of four years. However, the big man has not dropped down to as low as number three in the world rankings in the last six years.
As far as the previous season’s Roger Cup competition is concerned, neither Rafa nor Federer featured in the final battle as both of them were kicked out in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
“I had few issues with my knee”, Nadal commented on Friday, highlighting his tendinitis in both of the knees that affected his game during the last year.
However, this is not the case anymore as the Spaniard is in full form and shape in terms of his game as well as fitness. “I am really enjoying my game at the moment as I had a superb grass court as well as clay court tournament and so I am looking forward to the hard court competition with an even greater amount of confidence”, Nadal said.
Nadal ever since his Wimbledon title has not participated in any of the tournaments as he was taking a break prior to the major ones. While commenting on the possibilities of a Nadal- Federer final battle, the twenty four years old Spaniard said that he is not even thinking of it at the moment as the tournament features all the top forty players in the world and so every single clash is going to be a tough one beyond any measure of speculations. “And so at the moment I am only thinking for my opening match of the event”, he added.
All the top ranked tennis contenders will begin the play from Tuesday. As far as Monday’s matches are concerned, the Spanish tennis ace, David Ferrer will face David Nalbandian. The fifteen seeded Gael Montfils on the other hand will play against a Chilean tennis player, Fernando Gonzalez at York University.
Moreover, Frank Dancevic and Stanislas Wawrinka will also play their first round match on Monday. It is definitely going to be a close battle. Wawrinka was Roger’s partner when they captured gold medal in doubles at the Olympics Games in Beijing. In another match, the Canadian Peter Polansky will meet Jurgen Melzer, a fifteen ranked player in the world at York University.
