Roger Cup 2010 - Roger Federer seeded-third for the first time since 2003
The third ranked tennis ace, Roger Federer entered at the York University in Toronto under unusual conditions. The Rogers Cup 2010 is his very first championship since the grass court Grand Slam event a month ago. A shocker for the tennis enthusiasts is that this is the first competition of the Swiss tennis master, where he is seeded number-three to win the title after a period of seven years. Previously, Roger was seeded number-three back in November 2003.
The 29-years old Swiss, while commenting on his number-three rankings said, “Being listed as number-three tennis player in the world is something that I haven’t been since long.” He added, “Anyhow the good thing is that it works, as a motivating factor for me in performing better and helps me improve my rankings.”
Considering his age, it is evident that the star is left with limited playing time in tennis. However, aging is a natural process and no can put an end to it. Roger admitted his decelerating tennis skills due to his age. He claims that he is no longer the same Roger who grabbed eleven out of the sixteen major trophies from 2004 to 2007.
The last tennis player from the men’s side who captured a major trophy at 29-years or older was the former top ranked tennis ace, Andre Agassi, who won the hard court Australian Open title at 32-years of age.
The Swiss player has not captured a singles major trophy since the hard court Australian Open earlier this year. He made a total of twenty-three consecutive appearances in major semi finals and he was kicked out in the quarter final round at the clay court French Open as well as the grass court Grand Slam championship.
For novice players, a major victory as well as two quarterfinal runs in a single season would depict progress. However, this is not the case for the 29-years old Federer.
His lack of practice prior to the major events had also affected his performances beyond any measure of speculations. The lung infection Federer had during the month of February kept him away from the court for some period of time. In the recent past, the big man once again struggled at the grass court Grand Slam tournament at All England Club but due to his leg and back injuries could not do exceptionally well.
Federer after his quarterfinal exit said that he couldn’t catch the final battle between Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych, since he went on a luxury cruise along with his family to the Mediterranean.
After he came back, Federer decided to work on temporary basis with the coach, Paul Annacone. Their association will be confirmed after the United States Open championship, which is going to take place at the Flushing Meadows. “The aim has always been for me to further improve my game and I will keep on working hard”, he said.
As far as the ongoing Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 is concerned, the third-ranked Federer, who received a first round bye has won his opening match on Tuesday against Juan Ignacio Chela in a total of two sets with a final match score of 7-6, 6-3. Federer after the match while commenting on his victory said that he is glad with the way he battled against Juan on Tuesday. He is definitely hoping to recapture his form prior to the United States Open tournament.
His fans eagerly wait for the tennis star to make history before he retires and wish the tennis maestro very best of luck.
