Roger Federer, Andy Murray cruise into second round – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Defending champion, Roger Federer, crushed the Romanian challenger, Victor Hanescu, with a bagel at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Monday.
The local top ranked star, Andy Murray, also stole the show after registering a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Germany’s Benjamin Becker at this Major grass court event held in London, United Kingdom.
Seeded third in this prestigious tournament, Federer showed his true class and dumped the world number 48 with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 score line. As a result, the Swiss improved to 6-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against Hanescu and stayed on track
to defend his crown.
The Swiss top ranked star stated in a post match presser, “I thought overall I played a good match, no hiccups on the serve. I returned good, sometimes aggressive, sometimes with the chip, the way I usually do it on the grass. I think I handled that well....
So it was a perfect day.”
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer thundered into his match as he drew the first blood in the second game and cruised to a 3-0 lead. He continued hitting angled shots and slid his remaining serves with poise. As a result, the Swiss pulled out the opener
with a 6-3 score line.
Federer maintained his intensity in the following set. He went on a four-game killing spree before the Romanian could come on the score sheet. The 31-year-old then held his remaining serves with conviction and clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
The world number three, Federer, went berserk in the third set. He reeled off six games and clinched the set with a bagel.
The second seeded Murray also sought his rhythm on the Centre Court. The players last battled each other at the AEGON Championships earlier this month and with this victory, he maintained his winning record.
The Olympic gold medallist, Murray, was quoted in a courtside interview after stealing the show, “I put a lot of pressure on myself. I expect a lot of myself. It matters what's going on in my head, what I'm feeling while I'm on the court. And I think I've
done a good job of putting that other stuff to the back of my head and just concentrate on what's going on out there.”
Murray cruised to a 4-1 lead with a break of serve. Despite losing his edge in the seventh game, the Brit stayed calm and got the breakthrough in the last game, subsequently pocketed the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ranked second in the world, Murray kept momentum sailing in the following set. He got the breakthrough in the eighth game and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
The Dunblane native cashed two break chances in the third set and sealed the set by winning six games to two.
