Roger Federer: “Andy Murray is up there and he will be for a very long time” – Tennis News
World number three, Andy Murray, ousted the sixth ranked Czech, Tomas Berdych, in the opening clash of the Barclays Association of Tennis Professionals Tour Finals but lost the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the
second Round Robin clash that lowered his chances of qualifying for the semi-final of the contest that was played at the O2 Arena in London; the home soil of Murray.
The 25-year-old Briton did well to beat the number one Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the final Round Robin clash to book a berth in the semi-final of the tournament. However, the 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer,
didn’t allow the third ranked Scot to succeed in the second last contest of the event and dumped him in the front of the home crowd.
Later, the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, trashed the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer in straight sets to claim his second year-end finale title of his career. Moreover, the 31-year-old Swiss legend wasn’t allowed to record
his seventh season-end finale trophy that was a bit of a strange result for someone who has been invincible at the indoor hard courts of O2 Arena; winning the title for the last two years and on the verge of recording the hat-trick.
However, Federer was graceful in accepting the loss and complimented the rest of the players who took part in the contest. Talking about the reigning US Open Champion, Andy Murray, the Swiss top ranked professional said, “Andy
did great. I always hoped he would have a reaction like this, to be quite honest, even though it cost me maybe a gold medal. I was a bit disappointed in his reaction after the Australian Open finals, when I beat him there, then he went on a bad spell I think
through Rotterdam, Indian Wells and Miami.”
He further added, “So yes, you can say it sort of started for him at the Olympics. He did put himself in positions time and time again in the past and I think he’s learned from his mistakes now. Now he’s up there and he will be
for a very long time.”
Murray needs to retain the momentum in the start of the new season. He has broken the duck in the Grand Slam titles category and also clinched the prestigious Olympics gold medal. Now, he needs to build up on the victories of 2012
and become the strongest athlete for the Grand Slam titles along with the other Top-4 athletes.
