Roger Federer aims a veiled dig at Andy Murray – Tennis News
Lately, injuries have been one of the main reasons players are pulling out of major tournaments. Novak Djokovic didn’t play Shanghai and China Open because of shoulder injury. Maria Sharapova has seen several early exits because
of her chronic shoulder injury and recently Andy Murray pulled out of ATP Tour Finals because of groin injury.
Former World No.1, Roger Federer, has been very critical of the fact that players are not trying to fight through pain and play elite tournaments that a most of the player can only dream off. He was indirectly pointing towards
Briton No.1, Andy Murray, and said that there had been times that he had to carry an injury into a match but he never pulled out of the major tournaments and fought through the pain.
He said “I've been unlucky towards the end of the season - I've had a back issue, I've had a quad issue. The year I beat David Ferrer at the Masters [2007], I had mononucleosis [glandular fever] but I came through that.”
It has been a major setback for the fans as well that but tickets to see their hot favourite tennis icons battle it out at the courts. If players will not put an extra effort and tolerate the pain then there will be a negative
response from the fans as well.
There is no harm in taking care of your health and not participate until a players is fully fit but then there are sometimes that players should sacrifice their own comfort just to preach the flare of the game. If spectators would
see some dedication from the players despite an injury their respect for the player will suddenly raise several ranks.
Swiss Maestro further added “My body, even if it's injured, can still play really well, whereas maybe other players, if they are injured, it doesn't work anymore. Many matches in my career I've played hurt as well but was able
to somehow find a way to at least compete or sometimes even to win."
Federer has won all his three matches of the group stage of ATP World Tour Finals and has cruised into the semi-finals. He is all set to defend his title at London, O2 Arena. Considering his recent form, he is expected to win this
year as well and record seventh year-end title to his name.
