Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, had an impactful finish to the 2011 ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season and aims to bag a lot more in his next year’s campaigns. The current world number three is eyeing upon heavy prize money in 2012 ATP season, starting off from the Australian summer starting next month.
Federer has expressed that he is fully prepared to go all guns blazing at the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. The Grand Slam Down Under is offering the biggest purse in the history of the sport, with a total prize pool of $26 million. The winners of men’s and women’s category will receive $2.3 million riches along with the coveted Australian Open trophy.
Federer kept struggling to get his vintage form throughout the current year and finally got into his winning groove towards the end of the season, depicting he still has a lot more left in him to deliver in near future. The Swiss Maestro ended the 2011 ATP season with a hat-trick of championship titles to reclaim his third spot in the South African Airways ATP World Rankings, pushing Andy Murray of the Great Britain to the fourth place by the year end.
The third ranked Swiss got his winning momentum after defending his title at the Swiss Indoors Basel and then went on to take his first ATP Masters-level title of the year at BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. Federer went one step further with his winning impetus at the circuit ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, in London, winning the title for a record sixth time.
“For me, it was the strongest finish I've ever had in my career. I'm looking forward to next year,'' Federer ominously said.
With a 17-match winning streak on his back, Federer will step on the hard courts of Melbourne with sheer confidence to add another Grand Slam trophy to his lot. The Swiss has already banked $68.38 million on-court earnings and aims to pocket healthier sum of prize money in the next season. Federer has not been defeated since his semi-final loss at the hands of the world number one, Novak Djokovic, at the US Open. After securing the opening two sets comprehensively, Federer frittered away two match points to let the top seed back in business and dropped the last three sets in succession to lose the epic battle in New York.
