Roger Federer believes he was facing a far better opponent on the day – Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, thinks that he was in good form during the French Open but he faced an opponent who played even better on the day of their encounter.
Federer lost to reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, in straight sets 4-6, 5-7, 3-6 in the semi-final of the Roland Garros in Paris on Friday.
Djokovic took his revenge from Federer, as the Swiss Maestro had defeated the Serbian in last year’s semi-final, halting his 41-match winning streak from the start of the season.
The Swiss legend fought back from a deficit of two sets to beat Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter-finals but he had no answer to Djokovic’s superior game in the semis. Federer was leading in the second set, crafting
chances to win it and level the match at one set apiece but he squandered that opportunity and then lost easily in the third one.
Talking to the reporters in the post match press conference, Federer said, “Overall, I did feel my very best coming into the semis today. I was where I wanted to be, but ran into an opponent who was just better today. Still, it
gives me a little bit of a lift coming into the grass-court season now.”
The Swiss star added, “I was actually feeling particularly well in the second set, so that one obviously hurts the most to lose.’
Federer was hoping to complete his double career Grand Slam by winning his second French Open title. He had defeated Robin Soderling in the 2009 French Open final to capture his maiden Roland Garros crown and complete his first
Career Grand Slam.
The 16-time Major Champion has won all the other three ones i.e. Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open at least four times each. He had lost to Rafael Nadal four times in the title matches at this second Grand Slam
of the season.
Federer added, “I would have liked to do better here at Roland Garros. I'm supported so much, and I won in 2009, also. So I wanted to re-experience this. Unfortunately, it was not possible at all during these two weeks.”
The Swiss Maestro will now head to Halle in Germany to play the Gerry Weber Open and start his preparation for the Wimbledon Championships. Federer has won the title at the All England Club six times but failed on the last two
occasions.
