Roger Federer blasts at Juan Martin Del Potro in second round – Western & Southern Open 2011
An excellent start for the world number three, Roger Federer of Switzerland, at the Western and Southern Financial Group Open, defeating the 2009 US open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in the second round on Tuesday
afternoon.
The contest took place on the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States, with the defending champion registering a comprehensive straight sets victory at 6-3, 7-5, to move
into the round of 16. Federer took just one hour thirty two minutes of play to dispose of the aggressive Argentine from the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series tournament.
Seeded at number three in the tournament, Federer displayed his true vintage class to register his 41st victory of the running ATP season. The Swiss maestro broke the two-match winning streak of Del Potro against him,
as he lost both of the last two matches being played among them in 2009. Federer’s victory now extends his overall head-to-head lead against the Argentine by 7-2 and moves him one step closer to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Federer’s victory on Tuesday was a magnificent display of a quality serve game from the world number three. He Delivered 75 per cent of his serve on target and fired 12 thudding aces, brilliantly reeling 38 out of 46 first serve
points to oust Del Potro from the contest. The powerful Swiss serve remained unbroken in the entire matchup, while the third seed registered two out of eight break points to wrap up victory in straight sets.
“It went better than I thought,” commented Federer after concluding victory, “I played a wonderful first set and a very good second set, too.”

“He played like number 1 in the world,” said Del Potro of Federer in his post match reviews.
The Swiss maestro took hold of the opening set in the fourth game, when he registered the first serve break of the day after overcoming three deuces to lead 3-1. He held his lead to close out the first set at 6-3 and then carry
on with his aggressive intent in the following set as well. Del Potro saved five break points from Federer in the opening game and one more in the ninth game but finally the Swiss nailed a decisive one to close out victory at 7-5.
Federer moves into the third round of Cincinnati Masters, where he will take on the local wildcard, James Blake, for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
