Roger Federer blasts his way past Albert Ramos in the opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
A classy start to the Grand Slam campaign was seen from the Swiss tennis genius, Roger Federer, on Monday when he absolutely bulldozed the 43rd ranked Spaniard, Albert Ramos, in the opening round clash of the Wimbledon Championships. The world number three registered an easy breezy straight sets victory, hitting his opponent with a triple-breadstick at, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the second round of the tournament.
Federer was expected to win the contest over the unseeded Spaniard but such belligerent perform was not anticipated from the 30-year-old veteran. The third seed Swiss completely dismantled his opponent with sheer aggression and class, beating Ramos in every segment of the game to bag a thumping victory in style.
“I was able to do that a bit more than I thought I could. I was happy with the way things progressed during the match,” said Federer in his post match reviews. “I was able to return well, almost break him every single time. It was a good match for me, obviously. I felt very good out there today. It's rare to be up in the score line like today on a regular basis. It is maybe why it is a good time to try it out,” said Federer. “Then you can use it in tougher moments, difficult moments, to throw your opponents off. Who knows if I'll need it down the stretch. We'll see.”
It was a totally one-sided affair and the overall match statistics says it all. Federer banged in nine thudding aces and won 29 out of 40 points on his first serve to route the bleak Spaniard out of the tournament comprehensively. He crafted 18 break points and converted eight of them, whilst Ramos could barely register one out of his two opportunities to finish on the losing side in the end.
The most eminent feature of Federer’s game was his attacking strategy at the net. The Swiss Maestro launched forays on the net 34 times and was successful in converting juicy volleys in cross-court points on 25 occasions. His agility throughout the contest clearly defied his age and the faster grass courts of Wimbledon supported his pin-point hitting very well.
Up next for Federer is the unseeded Italian contender, Fabio Fognini, in the second round of the tournament. Fognini had to go through a four-setter before hunting down the French veteran, Michael Llodra, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, in the opening draw on Monday.
