Roger Federer blasts his way through Adrian Mannarino in round two – BNP Paribas Masters 2011
Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, continued his belligerence in the last ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event of the year by outplaying the French wildcard, Adrian Mannarino, in the second round on Wednesday.
The third seed Federer faced no real difficulty in disposing off the bleak Frenchman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to make it through to the third round of the Paris Masters. The Swiss exhibited a brilliant display of sheer dominance
over Mannarino, outclassing him in every segment of the game to registers his 55th victory of the running year.
Federer won his second ATP tournament of the current season by defending his title at the Swiss Indoors Basel, when he defeated the surprise qualifier, Kei Nishikori of Japan, last Sunday. The fourth ranked Swiss carried on with
his run on the indoor hard courts of Paris as well, booking a place in the round of 16 of the ATP World Tour 1000 tournament.
“I thought it was a good match for me,” said Federer after dumping Mannarino from the competition. “I think Mannarino didn’t play the best match, but for me it was a good way to find my way into the tournament. I felt rested coming
into this tournament, even though it's been busy the last few days. That’s a good feeling to have, because now I’ve got to back it up day after day if I want to do well here. I was happy with my performance today.  It was great.”
The third seeded Swiss was brilliant on his first serve, as he dropped merely three points on it to clinch 23 out of 26 en route to victory. Federer converted three of his five break points in the matchup to race past his opponent
in the most assertive manner, wrapping up victory in just 56 minutes of play. Mannarino utterly failed to craft a single break opportunity in the entire matchup and always remained on the back foot throughout the contest to finish on the losing side in the
end.
Federer will take on the other Frenchman, 16th seed Richard Gasquet, in the third round to fight for a berth in the quarter-finals. Gasquet registered a straight sets victory over this year’s South Africa Open champion,
Kevin Anderson, in the second round to book a battle with Federer. The Swiss maestro has never bagged the Paris Masters title in his career, with his best run coming last year, when he reached the semi-finals to fall against Gael Monfils of France.
