Roger Federer breezes into the quarters at Indian Wells
World number two, Swiss Roger Federer destroyed the 18-year-old American Ryan Harrison’s dream of winning an ATP title by dumping him out in straight sets in their fourth round match at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday night.
He has advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday night.
The 29-year-old Swiss is enjoying a 32-7 winning record and is on track for a fourth title in Indian Wells. The Swiss Master has so far a great start in this season as he won the title at Doha, reached the semi-final at Australian
open before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic and also reached the final at Dubai. In this event he entered with his top form and has yet to lose a set.
On the other side of net, the American wild card regardless of winning the Honolulu Challenger made early exits in the ATP world tour events. Although he was ousted in the first rounds at Delray Beach, Australian Open and Brisbane,
in this ATP event, Harrison has shown his best form and dumped some great players like 22nd seeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez and the rising star Canadian Milos Raonic in the previous rounds to reach this spot. He played his best in this biggest
match of his career but was outplayed by the 2nd seeded Swiss.
The Swiss Ace played his best tennis and broke the nervy youngsters serve with triple break point in the very first game. Both players then held their serve until Harrison broke Federer serve in the tenth game and levelled the
score 5-5. The American youngster showed his tremendous skills in the match in the next two games as he exchanged break with the former world number one and took the set to tie breaker. The higher ranked Swiss was finally able to snatch the set against the
young man, who fought back till the last moment, by prevailing in the tie breaker and won the set 7-6(4). The Swiss won the first set in 54 minutes, hammered 19 winners and earned an impressive 76 percent points on his first serve. He couldn’t finish off earlier
as he played poorly near the net and committed 20 unforced errors as compared to Harrison’s 13.
Federer carried his winning ways in the second set and held his serve in the first game. He held all his serves and broke Harrison’s serve in the sixth game to clinch the set 6-3. The American teenager gave a tough time to Federer
who had a lower first serve percentage and double faulted once, but the Swiss still managed to edge past Harrison through his higher return points and experience.
Federer will next face his 12th seeded countryman Stanislas Wawrinka who reached the quarter-finals earlier this day. He bounced back against the 7th seeded Czech Tomas Berdych to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
