Roger Federer breezes past Grega Zemlja to enter round two – ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament 2013
World number two, Roger Federer from Switzerland, crushed the Slovenian challenger, Grega Zemlja, with a breadstick at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament 2013 on Wednesday. He notched up a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Slovene to enter the second round
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event taking place in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Seeded top in this event, Federer displayed superb tennis to outclass Zemlja in their second encounter. After stealing the limelight in just under an hour, the Swiss improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against Zemlja and inched
closer towards his third title at this indoor hard court event.
The Swiss Maestro was quoted in a courtside interview after bagging this match:
“I thought the ball flew a little bit more today than in practice. Overall, I felt I'm moving and striking the ball ok. It took some time getting used to seeing the ball well again. I was happy with the way I reacted... saving break points and then getting
on a roll after that.”
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer assertively entered the Ahoy Rotterdam. He drew the first blood in the fifth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. The Swiss kept his remaining serves with poise and capitalised on another break chance in the last game,
eventually clicking the opener with a 6-3 win.
Federer went berserk in the proceeding set. After Zemlja kept his serve in the second game, the Swiss unleashed barrage of winners and reeled off the last five games to pull out the set with a breadstick.
Next in queue for Federer is the local wild card entrant Thiemo de Bakker inn round of 16.
The French contender, Richard Gasquet, will accompany Federer in the proceeding round. He withstood 11 aces he faced to outsmart the Serbian star, Viktor Troicki, with a breadstick. Gasquet dominated in the end to jolt down a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory in almost
one and a half hour. The French entered this tournament after capturing his second year-to-date title at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier last week.
