Roger Federer continues ascent as he defeats Janko Tipsarevic – French Open 2011
Swiss maestro Roger Federer continued his ascent at the 2011 Roland Garros as he met and defeated Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the third round on Friday, May 27th.
In a match that lasted almost ninety minutes, the Swiss maestro secured a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 victory against the inexperienced Serb.
Winner of sixteen Grand Slams, Federer has been hoping to add another to his collection ever since his win at the 2010 Australian Open. Determined for success here, Federer started off on the title rung in brilliant form as he destroyed Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in straight sets in the opening round and then local wildcard entrant Maxime Teixeira in the second.
Pitted against Tipsarevic for the fourth time in his career, Federer carried over his form into the third round as he blasted away the Serb in the opening set. Serving for the first game, the Swiss held his serve comfortably putting himself on the scoreboard. Minutes later Tipsarevic also made his way up there, levelling the score at 1-1.
However, this was the last game the Serb won as the Swiss maestro reeled off five straight games to clinch a breadstick victory in just nineteen minutes. He hit a couple of aces and registered an amazing 80% win on his first serve, to lead the set score 1-0.
The second set saw some resistance from the Serb as he managed to match blow for blow to keep the score tied for the first four games. However, a couple of errant strokes from Tipsarevic gave Federer the coveted break in the fifth game. Consolidating on his break and surviving five long deuces in the sixth game, Federer was able to go 4-2 in the lead. A successful hold of serve from both the players left Federer serving out the set at 5-4. Without losing a single point in the tenth game riding on Tipsarevic’s “into-the-net” shots, Federer clinched a 6-4 victory, going 2-0 in the lead.
A determined and in-form Swiss continued his onslaught against the Serb in the third set. An early break put the Swiss in a 3-1 lead, which he extended to a 4-2 one minutes later. Maintaining his dominance over the Serb, Federer broke him in the ninth game to clinch a 6-3 victory and seal his straight sets victory.
The Swiss now moves on ahead to play either compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka or local Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
