Roger Federer cruises into the fourth round of the Australian Open
After having a tough outing in the second round against Gilles Simon, world number two Roger Federer eased into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight sets win over Belgian Xavier Malisse.
The Belgian player had no clue as Federer stamped his authority on the match, and crusied to a 6-3, 6-3 and a breadstick win in the final set by 6-1.
The victory in today’s match against Malisse took Federer to his 57th win in Melbourne. He surpassed the record of Swedish player Stefan Edberg for the most number of match wins in the Australian Open.
The game appeared to be an easy one for Federer as he broke his opponents serve early in the first set and then went on to win the first set easily. The second set however, was a bit tough for the former world number one.
He was broken early in the set and Malisse took a 3-1 lead. After that Federer came back strongly winning 10 straight games to win the match easily.
The Swiss ace said after the match, “I thought today was intense. The first two sets almost didn't reflect how tough it could have been or how tough it was.”
He further added, “I think that maybe broke his will a little bit because he was up 3-1 in the second [set]. Then I was able to come back and win 10 straight games which was obviously a great run I got on. I was able to do a few different things.”
If Federer wins the next round match, he will reach his 27th straight Grand Slam quarter-final. The Swiss has won the Australian Open four times before and will be eying a fifth title.
Federer will be up-against the Spaniard Tommy Robredo in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The Swiss has a very good record against Robredo as he has defeated him on all the nine occasions both players have met.
Robredo overcame Sergiy Stakhovsky in his third round match. The 28-year-old Spaniard lost the first set but came back strongly in the match to take the next three sets of the match. The Spaniard was once ranked fifth in the world but is ranked 52 at the
moment.
He will look to improve his record against Federer, while the Swiss will be eying a good match against Robredo, and will be looking forward to better his overall record against him.
