Roger Federer cruises past Arnaud Clement at Wimbledon
After clawing his way back from the brink of defeat in his opening match and weathering yet another staunch challenge in the second, Roger Federer recorded a much more straightforward victory in his third round match against Arnaud Clement.
Federer didn’t drop a set against the 32-year-old, wrapping up a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory against a player who doesn’t possess the weapons to pierce the most airtight game in men’s tennis.
The top seed produced a businesslike performance to end the Frenchman’s stay at Wimbledon in 2010, breaking Clement’s serve twice in the first set, once in the second and in the fifth and seventh games of the third set to remain that vital step ahead of his opponent from almost beginning to end.
Federer made just 12 unforced errors for the match to Clement’s 20; hit 22 winners to 12; and won 85% of the time he approached the net, something which he did on 26 occasions in the hour and 35 minutes the match lasted.
All-in-all, it was the steadying match the defending champion needed as he moves through to the round of 16 and a potentially tricky match against French Open semi-finalist Jurgen Melzer, who defeated 22nd seed Feliciano Lopez in his third round match earlier on day five.
