Roger Federer cruises past Ivan Dodig to enter pre-quarters – BNP Paribas Open 2013
World number two, Roger Federer from Switzerland, squeaked past the Croatian contender, Ivan Dodig, with a breadstick at the BNP Paribas Open 2013 on Monday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Croat to secure a spot in the fourth round at this
ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
Seeded second in this event, Federer stayed on track to defend his title after ousting the Croat in their first encounter. After ruling the battle in almost an hour, the Swiss edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against Dodig and reached the
round of 16 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The 31-year-old stated in a courtside interview after winning the match:
"It was a tough day. Ivan played really well and I struggled early on in the first few games. Then I got a bit of a break at the end of the first set, started to play better. In the last couple of games Ivan didn't play so well and I was able to take advantage
of it. It was a really good win for me."
The defending champion, Federer showed his class in the begging of the match. He smoothly held his entire serves with ease. The Swiss got the breakthrough in the second last game and eventually clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Federer went berserk in the following set. He reeled off four games before Dodig could come on the score sheet. The Swiss Maestro bagged the last two games and clinched the set with a breadstick.
The former world number one, Federer will square off against his compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the fourth round. Wawrinka dismissed two-time champion Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets later that day.
Elsewhere, the 10th seed Richard Gasquet outclassed the Polish challenger, Jerzy Janowicz, in straight sets to progress. He recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory against the Pole in just 66 minutes. The Frenchman impressively won 76 per cent of his service
points and cashed three break chances to prevail.
Next in queue for Gasquet is the sixth seed, Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic.
