Roger Federer crushes Fabio Fognini in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, remained on course for a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title, breezing past Fabio Fognini of Italy into the third round at the All England Club on Wednesday.
Ranked third in the world, the Swiss legend dropped just six games in the entire contest, as he grabbed the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and 14 minutes.
Federer, who has started with a majestic game at this year’s championships and looks to finish his matches in a hurry, had took only an hour and 19 minutes to knock out Spain’s Albert Ramos in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in the
first round.
The latest match was special from another point of view as well, as members of the Royal family of the Great Britain were also there to witness the contest. Sitting in the first row of the Royal box, His Royal Highness, The Prince
of Wales; and Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, watched Federer showing his class act.
One of the best players in the history of the sport, Federer, did not take any time to move ahead of his opponent, capturing opening three games and racing to a 3-0 advantage. Fognini managed to open his account but did not disturb
the scoreboard further, losing it 1-6.
The Swiss legend hit a blow to his Italian rival in the third game of the second set and held his subsequent serve to attain a 3-1 lead. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, Fognini played poorly, failing to hold it and going down
3-6.
The start of the third was steadier than the first two, as both players held their serve in the first four games to level the proceedings at 2-2. Though, it was all Federer show afterwards, as he pocketed four in a row to close
it 6-2.
Commenting on his game, Federer said, “I was serving well. You're not going to get many chances throughout a set, maybe, against me, when I'm serving well. I didn't think it was that easy of a match. [I] really tried to focus hard
and made sure I played sort of a clean match, which I was able to do again today.”
The Swiss added, talking about the arrival of the Prince and Princess, "They do brief you beforehand. I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously, we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do. We're
thrilled for the tennis family that they came to watch Wimbledon today."
The 16-time Grand Slam winner will take on Julien Benneteau of France in the third round.
