Roger Federer defeated as Andy Murray captures Shanghai Masters
2010 title
The twenty three year old Scott, Andy Murray captured his sixth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown on Sunday with a two setter win over Roger Federer in the title battle at 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters. The final match score was
6-3, 6-2.
The world number four, who qualified for the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour in London earlier in the week, secured one thousand ATP Ranking points along with a prize money of $616,500 as a result of this victory.
After having fallen down in his first three final clashes with the Swiss tennis maestro including this year’s opening Grand Slam, the Australian Open in Melbourne, Murray has now successfully posted two final victories versus Federer.
His first one came in Toronto where the right hander got the better of the twenty nine year old Federer in the final of the Roger Cup in straight sets.
The Scott, while commenting on Federer’s game after his title victory on Sunday, said, "I enjoy playing him. I do not find it easy at all. It is incredibly difficult every time. However, I love the challenge of playing against
him. I do not fear playing him. Every time I go on, I know I need to play great tennis to triumph against him."
Federer, on the other hand as a result of this loss has failed to level the record of eighteen ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns as the Swiss attempted to tie with the world number one, Rafael Nadal who had lifted his eighteenth
Masters thousand title in Madrid after getting the better of Roger.
Both the contenders came into the title battle after playing some excellent tennis all through the week. Federer had made his way into the final after recording impressive victories over Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic in the
quarter and semi final stages respectively. However, despite his good form, the Swiss committed a total of thirty unforced errors at the title battle in his effort to grab his third trophy of the year.
The Brit, on the other hand made a quick start and broke serve in the opening game as Roger over pressed on his forehand and made a couple of mistakes right in the start. The Swiss managed to bounce back in the fourth and then
the eight games of the opening set but Murray again took lead in the ninth game as he secured two set points after smashing a forehand to win the set.
The decisive set didn’t change the story as Andy further improved his game and forced his opponent to repeat errors. The Scott, in the end, registered his win.
Murray, after the match, said, "As a tournament overall, I am very happy with it. Against Roger, you have to go after it early. I returned his serve well tonight and got a lot of free points on my serve. My second serve has improved
so much since the start of the season.”
The twenty nine year old Federer, who was looking to add to the titles he has captured so far in 2010 at Melbourne and Cincinnati, stated that he played quite well throughout the tournament and is satisfied with his form and level
of the game at the moment. The sixteen time Grand Slam champion, as a result of this loss, has dropped down to a career mark of 63-28 in tour-level finals.
