Roger Federer defeats Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets in second round clash at Monte Carlo
Reigning World Number 3 Roger Federer ended Philipp Kohlschreiber’s Monte Carlo dreams in straight sets at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo just minutes ago, dismissing the player in easy straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Federer, who is also known as the Swiss Maestro, played one of his trademark brisk matches to send Kohlschreiber packing in just fifty minutes. This is the shortest match which has been played at the tournament so far this year.
This is Federer’s opening match at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters, a tournament where his nemesis Rafael Nadal has only lost one encounter throughout his illustrious career. Kohlschreiber made it to the second round of the tournament,
and is currently ranked World Number 32.
Roger Federer lived up to expectations in this match, undoing Kohlschreiber with ruthless game-play to proceed to the third round of the match. The Swiss 29-year-old fired off four aces during the match, and managed to defend 100
per cent of his break points. Federer used a sublime mixture of drop shots and lobs to send his opponent packing. In addition to this, he also broke his German opponent four times during the match, committing just two double faults in the process. The match
ended with Federer taking a whopping 64 per cent of the total points in the match, to set up a winning score-line of 6-2, 6-1.
This is the sixth career meeting between Roger Federer and Philipp Kohlschreiber, who turned pro within three years of each other. Federer has collected a whopping 67 career titles, while Kohlschreiber has been left far behind
with just two. The head-to-head score between the two pros is now 6-0, with their last career meeting taking place at the 2010 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Cincinnati. It was not much of a battle, as Kohlschreiber withdrew from the tournament before the match
could take place.
Roger Federer may be facing Marin Cilic, who is seeded fifteenth, in the next round of the prestigious ATP Masters event.
