Roger Federer defeats Santiago Giraldo in the opening round – US Open 2011
Former world number one, Roger Federer of Switzerland, blew away the unseeded Colombian competitor, Santiago Giraldo, in the opening round of the US Open, on Monday night.
The contest took place on the Arthur Ashe Stadium of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the third seeded Swiss maestro absolutely blowing away
the young Colombian to clear the first round of the Grand Slam tournament.
Federer took one hour and forty six minutes of play to settle the final scores at 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, to dispose of Giraldo from the opening round in style. The third seeded Swiss appeared in his full flow and gave away no chances to
his opponent to have his impact over the game. Federer faced no real challenge from the Colombian in the entire matchup and cruised through the sets to conclude a comprehensive victory in the end.
As he is renowned for, the third seeded Swiss was off to an aggressive start in the opening set, reeling off 10 out of 16 first serve points and singing three out of eight serve breaks to get the upper hand in the matchup. Federer
coughed 17 unforced errors in the opener but 12 cracking winners assisted him to seal the first set at 6-4. The Swiss domination kept prevailing in the following set and Federer registered two more serve breaks to pocket the second set at 6-3.
Federer kept his onslaught in the third set as well and nailed two straight serve breaks to drive Giraldo out of the competition with the utmost ease. He fired 13 winners and secured 14 out of 17 first serve points in the third
set to wrap up victory at 6-2, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
Federer will take on the Israeli competitor, Dudi Sela, in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday. Sela made a upset in the opening round by defeating Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in enthralling five-setter 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3,
6-0 to meet Federer in the second round.
