Roger Federer dismisses Murray; stands on edge of final four round qualification
The 29-year-old Roger Federer swept aside Andy Murray at the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Tuesday to further improve his chances of qualifying into the semi final round in London.
World number two missed only eight points on serve versus an under-par Scott for a two setter win on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2. The battle was stretched to a time period of seventy six minutes.
The top ranked Brit, Andy Murray, committed a total of 26 unforced errors and was constantly rushed into error with Roger taking 14 of 17 points at the net. It was their fourteenth career clash on the tour.
“I do not think he played his best match. He came out and made some mistakes. Maybe it was due to my good play. From my side, I was off course extremely glad. It was a good match. I played tough and solid from start to finish.
I think on a level, I prevented energy so far. It has been good. I have had the days off in between and only having to play two sets, it is nice at the end of the season,” reflected the former world number one on Tuesday.
The Swiss superstar as a result of this victory will next take on Robin Soderling from Sweden for a semi final berth in the elite eight man field in London. Soderling reached the final round robin match after overpowering David
Ferrer of Spain later in the evening.
“I hope, if I make it to the semis, then I am fresh and really ready to go. Because last year I played four matches and they all went the distance. I am excited to play Soderling. I have a great record against him. I hope I can
play the same level like I did the last two,” added Federer.
The right hander Murray, on the other hand, who is currently ranked number 5 in the South African Airways ATP list, did not play at his top level right from the start of the match. The Swiss, in comparison, did well to immediately
take a break point during the opening game of the first set with a backhand pass.
The 16 time Grand Slam Champion, who has lost only 4 of his last 36 clashes since the grass court Grand slam tournament in London, capitalised on Andy’s struggle for rhythm on his serves and backhand, and looked to be running away
with the set in front of huge crowd in London.
Andy’s big chance to bounce back came during the ninth game of the 36 minute opening set, when he had Swiss serving at 0/30 after Federer blasted a forehand long and was passed by his opponent at the net. Roger regained control
with an overhead put-away, a forehand winner down the line. His opening set point chance came when Andy drilled a forehand wide. Murray finished the first set having committed a total of 13 unforced errors.
Federer made a blistering start to the decisive set when he fired a stunning forehand winner during his third break point chance in the opening game. He kept on playing well and thus sealed win in the end.
The Swiss, by virtue of his victory, has improved his event mark to 31-7 on the tour.
Murray, while commenting on his performance after the match said on Tuesday that he did not play well as he served as well as returned poorly without any question.
