Roger Federer dismisses Vasek Pospisil in the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 3 Roger Federer of Switzerland won his first match as a 30-year-old, beating Canadian wild card entrant Vasek Pospisil, ranked 155th in the world, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 32 at the Rogers
Cup in Montreal on Wednesday. The Swiss Maestro took just one hour and seventeen minutes to seal the match.
Federer and Pospisil held their serve in the first eleven games of the opening set and took the score to 6-5 in favour of the Swiss. The sixteen-time grand slam champion struck at the right time, breaking the Canadian in the twelfth
game to claim the set 7-5.
The Swiss legend kept his first serve percentage at 59 percent and fired three aces in the first set. Federer had an incredible strike rate on his serve, clinching thirteen of the seventeen first service points and eleven of the
twelve second service points in the opening set. The 30-year-old did not face any break point on his own serve and capitalised on the one break point opportunity he created on Pospisil’s serve in the first set.
After winning a close first set, Federer came roaring into the second set as he broke the Canadian in the second game and won his next service game to build a 3-0 lead. The Swiss Maestro kept the single break advantage throughout
the set, serving it out at 5-3.
Federer slightly improved his first serve percentage, delivering 57 percent of the first serves and hitting one ace in the second set. Just like the first set, the Swiss grabbed most of the service points, clinching an amazing
twelve of the thirteen points on the first serve and eight of the ten points on the second serve in the second set.
Federer said, talking to the journalists after the match, “It felt good. I'm still able to move. The match was tough because I was playing against a player I don't know so well. It was my first match outdoors on hard courts, although
I played Davis Cup. It was a bit tough.
The Swiss added, “I believe I didn't play so well, wasn't aggressive enough. But also I must say he didn't give me the opportunity to do that. He was playing well. So I'm happy I came out of it and I will have a second chance tomorrow.”
Federer is drawn to play world number 16 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the round of 16. It will be a re-match of their quarterfinal encounter at the Wimbledon Championships, where Tsonga prevailed in five sets.
