Roger Federer draws silver medal from the Olympics – Tennis News
World number one, Roger Federer, bowed out to the third seed, Andy Murray, in the final showdown at the London Olympics 2012, a major sports event held after every four years. However, he made his nation proud by grabbing the silver medal.
The Swiss Maestro displayed top notch skills throughout Games of x*x Olympiad but suffered a 2-6, 1-6, 4-6 loss at the hands of the British top in one hour and 56 minutes on Centre Court in Wimbledon. Despite his loss, Federer was happy to shelf his first
singles medal at Olympics in his fourth appearance.
Federer was quoted in a courtside interview after losing the final match:
“I think this is as good as I could do during these championships. Andy was much better than I was today in many aspects of the game. For me, it’s been a great month. I won Wimbledon, became World No. 1 again, and I got silver. Don’t feel too bad for me.
I am very, very proud honestly to have won a silver. I felt like I won my silver, I didn’t lose it. So I feel very, very happy.”
Both stars last fought each other at Wimbledon a month ago where Federer bounced back to lift his 17th Grand Slam title. The Swiss reflected about Murray’s comeback:
“He’s an amazing player already. I thought he played a very, very good Wimbledon Championship.
The 30-year-old grasped gold medal in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics four years ago. However, this silver medal is his first in singles event in his four Olympics appearances.
The Swiss ace showed brilliant tennis en route to the final round. He was at brink of exiting in the opening round against Alejandro Falla from Colombia. Federer then recorded straight set victories against Julien Benneteau, Denis Istomin and 10th
seeded John Isner before setting up a semi-final clash against eighth seeded Juan Martin Del Potro. He lost the opening set but got back in contention after prevailing in the second set tie-breaker. The Swiss then edged past Del Potro by 19-17 in the deciding
final set before securing a place in the gold medal match.
