Roger Federer eases past Andy Roddick to reach the semi-final rounds – Swiss Indoors Basel 2011
In the clash between the two former world number one players, third seed Roger Federer overcame Andy Roddick of the United States in the quarter-final round of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday evening.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with the Swiss maestro registering a straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-2, to drive Roddick out of the competition in an assertive fashion.
Four times Swiss Indoors champion, Federer took merely 64 minutes of play to prove his sheer dominance over the seventh seeded American. The home town hero outclassed Roddick in every segment of the game and booked himself a place
in the semi-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event. Federer dropped just four points on his first serve, clinching 21 out of 25 points and converted three out of four break opportunities in the matchup to come out as the
winner.
Roddick, who was lacking to serve precisely in the second round matchup against Radek Stepanek, was led down by his pathetic serve in this game as well. The American had a below par serve accuracy of merely 36 per cent in the contest
and utterly failed to craft a single break point in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end.
The Swiss maestro also defeated Roddick in the semi-finals of the same venue last year and replicated the similar performance with his racquet on Friday night. The 30-year-old has bagged just one ATP championship title in the running
season so far and desperately needs one to get back in his winning groove. A tough competition was anticipated between the two top class players on Friday but Roddick proved to be a wall of sand against the fury of the defending champion, crumbling in straight
sets to let him through.
“We’ve played on so many occasions that sometimes you can’t play your best, and that’s what happened to Andy today,” said Federer, who improved to a 21-2 career lead over Roddick. "He didn’t have a very good serving day and then
once I get a chance to get into all his service games, it’s always going to be difficult for him to find a way.”
Federer will take on his fellow compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the semi-finals on Saturday evening to earn a title shot at the Davidoff Swiss indoors Basel.
