Roger Federer ends Marin Cilic’s run at the Monte Carlo Masters
World number three Roger Federer raced into the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters securing a straight sets victory against the 22-year-old Croat, Marin Cilic.
Cilic’s loss left his record at 15-8 this season and 0-2 against the 29-year-old Swiss, who beat him at the 2008 ATP World Tour Masters Paris. The Croat moved past Andreas Seppi and Marcel Granollers to make it that far, before
losing to Federer in straight sets. Federer on the other hand, has been phenomenal this season with a 24-4 win loss mark . He has only lost four matches in the season; three to Novak Djokovic and one to Rafael Nadal.
Cilic was overpowered for the second time by the Swiss, a tough and extremely professional player on tour whose few balls were just enough to get him past the third round. Federer, seeded second in the tournament, was at his most
lethal on clay court in his first match where he edged past Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in straight sets.
Longing for a spot in the quarterfinals, the 29-year-old Swiss kicked off the first set on a very dominating note. Swiss managed to impose a lot of pressure on his lower ranked opponent not allowing him to bounce back at any stage.
Continuing his ascent, the Swiss did not lose a single point on serve until 4-3. He won majority of points on stats with 92 percent on his first serves and 80 percent on his second serves respectively. The French crowd observed a moment of silence before a
tricky break of serve gave the Swiss the first set with a 6-4 score line.
The final set started off with an equally aggressive note before the Swiss clinched a break in the sixth game to steal the match with a 6-3, 6-4 score line. The second set saw Federer saving 100 percent breakpoints, 72 percent
of points on first serves and 67 percent of points on second serves respectively.
Federer is all set to meet Jurgen Melzer in the quarterfinals. Melzer breezed past Nicolas Almagro and Robin Haase to make it this far. Pair is joined by Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Murray, Frederico Gil, Viktor Troicki and
David Ferrer. They all will compete to make it to the “Last Four”.
