The Swiss Maestro made his debut at this event in 2002 with jolting down a straight set victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero.
“I remember being extremely excited having qualified because I was somewhat close in 2001. So when I did qualify, and I played Juan Carlos, who was sort of my age, I was very excited. I played a great match, solid from both sides. I was just a bit better.
And then I played well throughout. That was a big moment for me.”
In the following year, Federer conquered his first title at this season-ending event. He stunned top seeded Andy Roddick in semis and overpowered Andre Agassi in the final showdown.
Federer also stated that his success at the finals helped him become the world number one the following season. He gained confidence boost with his victory in the ATP World Tour Finals and carried his rhythm at the Australian Open. The Swiss outmuscled Carlos
Ferrero and Marat Safin to conquer the Grand Slam event and claim top rank at the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings. He reflected:
“That gave me an amazing confidence going to Australia, becoming World No. 1 there, beating Ferrero and [Marat] Safin in finals and semi-finals.”
The 31-year-old is bidding for seventh heaven at this circuit finale. He is also eyeing for his third straight title at this tournament.
