Roger Federer equals Jimmy Connors’ record
Roger Federer reached his 27th consecutive Grand Slam final after he overcame the Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2 in the fourth round of the Australian Open tournament.
The Swiss player was in devastating form in the first set as he didn’t drop a point on his serve. He played some extraordinary tennis in the first half-hour but then he became a bit inconsistent in the second set.
The world number 2 made quite a lot of unforced-errors in the second set of the match and allowed Robredo to bounce back in the match. The overall unforced-errors by Federer were 40 in the match which were 11 more than his opponent.
After losing the second set, the Swiss didn’t panic and came back strongly in the match. He won the next two sets and equalled the record of Jimmy Connor of reaching 27 straight Grand Slam quarter-finals.
Federer hit 10 aces and 50 winners in the match which proved to be too good for the Spaniard. After winning the match, the former world number 1 stated, “I'm happy I'm still alive and going strong in the tournament.”
He further said, “It's a tough match. I knew Robredo was going to come out and hit a lot of loopy shots and make me earn it. He wasn't going to just give it to me.”
The Swiss praised Robredo and said that he played very good tennis especially in the second set. Federer said that Robredo didn’t allow him too many chances on his serve which cost him the second set.
Although Federer made a lot of unforced-errors in the match, he said that it didn’t bother him at all. He stated that as long as he was playing in a positive manner, little errors will not affect his performance at all. He further said that mistakes can
be made in a match while playing aggressively.
Robredo was satisfied with his performance and said, “Being there and winning the second set is great. Then in the third, I had chances to break him in the beginning. He broke me, and then I had chances to win these games again. If you make these mistakes
with Federer, then it's normal that he gets the third set, and then it's very difficult to stop him. I'm happy [with] the way I performed.”
Stanislas Wawrinka will feature in the quarter-final against Federer. Wawrinka is a close friend of Federer and he has been in good from. He defeated Andy Roddick in his fourth round match and will be looking to improve his 1-6 record against Federer.
