Roger Federer eyeing a better grass court season – Tennis News
Former world number one, Roger Federer, suffered the agonizing straight sets defeat at the hands of the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, who locks horns with the defending champion, Rafael Nadal, in the final of the Roland
Garros French Open on Sunday.
Talking about his dismal performance in the semi-final on Friday, he confessed, “That's how it goes sometimes. I've got to change things around now for grass anyway. I'm looking forward to that. It's been a difficult clay court
season. Still, it gives me a little bit of a lift, coming into the grass court season now.”
The Swiss Maestro has always favoured the grass court surface and even if he had gone pass the Serb tennis ace, he would not have been forgiven by the King of Clay who has been absolutely ruthless with his performance on red dirt
this year.
He further added, “I was struggling to sort of keep the ball in play long enough, even though I wasn't hitting the ball poorly. It's been a tough week for me. Maybe in these conditions today didn't help me, help the cause; let's
put it that way. I did have enough chances, so it's no excuse there.”
It has been a very disappointing clay court season for the Federer fans except his mastery on the blue clay court in Mutua Madrid Open, when he survived the slippery surface and didn’t stoop to the inferior ranked players just
like his arch rivals, Djokovic and Nadal, did. He clasped the title and took the number two spot in the world but he was again pushed down to world number three by the Spanish superstar after he managed to strip the Serb number one from his title in Rome.
Federer struggled badly on the eve of Friday; was in no position to counter the onslaught of the Serb. He committed 40+ unforced errors which is very uncharacteristic of him. His backhand was not working at all and Djokovic capitalized
on that; forced him to play bulk of the shots with backhand and reigned supreme over him in three sets.
However, the new season at grass is waiting for the legendary tennis icon and everyone wishes that he regains his form and gives competition to his arch rivals. If he is able to do that, the title of Wimbledon might not stay with
the Serb tennis ace who has struggled against the Swiss on other surfaces except clay.
