Roger Federer eyeing for a ‘perfect’ finish to the 2012 ATP season – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Roger Federer, is going really strong in his Basel campaign and is aiming to bag the remaining ATP titles this year to close the season on a high note. The Swiss Maestro has cited that he plans to win
the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament, followed by the Paris Masters and eventually the circuit-ending grand finale, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. However, the tennis genius wants to accomplish his task step by step, starting from his home soil at Basel.
Federer is two-times defending champion at Swiss Indoors Basel tournament and is eyeing to register his second hat-trick of titles at home. He already bagged three back-to-back championships in Basel from 2006 to 2008 and has been
the champion here since the last two years. Winning the sixth title on the same venue will certainly be an achievement of sorts but the 31-year-old veteran doesn’t want to get carried away by the moment. His eyes are fixed on sustaining his world number one
spot and he has to win the upcoming Paris Masters title for this purpose.
“I think it’s possible, but look, it’s tough,” Federer said. “It all depends on what the scheduling is, who your opponents are and if you get a chance to get on a run... But that shouldn’t be my goal right now to win all three
again. The goal is to first play here and see how I go.”
The season-ending finale, ATP World Tour Finals, is coming right after the Maris Masters tournament and there is no rest week between these two mega events. So it is for sure that the next two weeks will be extremely hectic for
the tennis professionals, especially the 31-year-old Swiss Maestro.
“There’s no question I want to play well at the [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals,” he said. “That should be the highlight of the season now at the end of the year. It is one of the biggest events we have in the sport and I want
to finish the season strong against my fellow Top 10 players. I have to think day by day. It’s the only way to handle the next crazy three weeks.”
It is hoped that Federer will face no resistance in claiming his sixth Swiss Indoors Basel title, as no other Top-5 contestant is featuring this event. He might face some tough time at the hands of Juan Martin Del Potro but he
has been very successful against the Argentinean number one contender this season.
