Roger Federer eyeing number one spot after staying out of action for a while – Tennis News
Former world number one, Roger Federer, will be back in action at the Mutua Madrid Open. He took some time to drain the fatigue away and freshen up for a big clay court season that will be followed up with the Grand Slam tournament,
the Roland Garros French Open. He feels to be on top of his game and proclaimed that the break from professional tennis helped him regroup and gather some energy to play lengthy encounters.
He said, “I needed it because I did play so, so much and this break was also looking ahead to what's to come and there's a lot on my plate and want to be fresh in my mind and fit in my body for those big goals ahead. It was more
about relaxing my body because I had been playing with some niggling injuries over a few weeks, or a few months almost, and I am happy they went away. It was just to get away from tennis for a while really, get away from the craziness that surrounds it, the
matches and the press and all that stuff. So that was nice to just recharge the batteries that were the key during this break.”
Federer has not featured in any tournament since her last clash in the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami at the end of the March. He was a victim of an upset by another former world number one, Andy Roddick, which was thought to be the
pivotal point in Swiss Maestro’s decision to step away from courts and head towards vacations.
However, Federer has denied all such claims and stated that it was crucial for him to take some rest because he is aging and can’t play throughout the calendar year. His stamina has seen a major slump but his class is up their
meeting the likes of the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, and Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal.
World number three, Federer has received a first round Bye in Madrid Open. He awaits the winner of the clash between the Canadian number one, Milos Raonic, and former world number three, David Nalbandian.
Regardless of who wins the first round clash, it will be a tough first match for Federer after the break but he is out there to stamp his authority and plans to devastate anyone who will come in his way. It seems like the confidence
is back for the big number three and he plans to dethrone the King of Clay, Nadal.
