Roger Federer eyeing ‘triple glory’ at the Wimbledon final – Tennis News
16-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, rocked the tennis world after overwhelming the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships on Friday. He is now there in his eighth final
at the All England Club to face the home favourite, Andy Murray, on the eve of Sunday. It’s not just any other title match for the Swiss Maestro but winning the battle will write his names in the history books forever.
It is the golden opportunity Federer has been so desperately waiting for more than two years (i.e. becoming the world number one again). He has stated a number of times that his primary goal in this season is to reclaim the top
spot in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings and his consistent hard work is about to pay off in his next encounter against Murray.
Secondly, winning the crown will also level Federer with the legendary American, Pete Sampras, for winning the most number of Wimbledon titles at seven. It will be an achievement of sorts and tennis fans know that there is no one
else in the professional world to break this record in the near future.
Federer’s feat of toppling Djokovic in the semi-final clash was itself a huge accomplishment but the Swiss tennis genius is eying for the bigger prizes in the final showdown.
“I've got a tough task ahead of me,” Federer told BBC Television on Friday. “There's a lot on the line for me, all-time Grand Slam record, World No. 1.”
Winning the encounter against Murray on Sunday, the third and the most desired accomplishment for Federer will be to remain on the world number one spot for the most number of weeks in the history of the game. Currently, Sampras
is holding this record with 286 weeks and Federer falling short by just one week. Becoming the top ranked player will write Federer’s name on top of the list and there are very few doubts that anyone can ever went on to beat him.
“Everybody knows what a hero he (Sampras) is to me and how much I admire what he's been able to achieve in tennis,” said Federer. “I don't think he ever lost a Grand Slam final here at Wimbledon. He won seven out of seven, which
is just incredible, particularly in the times he played against all these big servers. So I'm very proud to have a shot of equalling Pete, but right now the focus is obviously resting and preparing for the next match.”
Federer will be under immense pressure and would never want to squander this golden opportunity at any cost. He is known to be the greatest player in the sport of tennis and his victory in the Sunday’s match will certainly create
a new history.
