Roger Federer eyes to clinch the number one spot next season – Tennis News
Finishing the 2011 ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season at number three, the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, believes that he has still left a lot of steam in him to reach the world number one spot in the coming season. The 30-year-old had a very
strong finish to the tennis season this year but he will still trail 5,460 ranking points behind the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, at the start of the 2012 ATP season.
While talking to a news reporter, Federer expressed that he desires to break Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks at the top of the ATP singles rankings. The Swiss fell just one week short of surpassing Sampras’ record and believes he can do it in the coming
ATP season.
“Well, that’s a long way to go, but who knows? One day maybe I’ll get there,” Federer said of the hunt for world number one, “I had to just kind of ignore it at the moment because I know that Novak with his unbelievable year has kind of put that very far
from me, but then again, all of the sudden you play well and you win 17 matches in a row and you’re back where you at least feel if you win a Slam or something, you’re right in the conversation again, so that’s interesting and that excites me.”
The Swiss maestro labored throughout the 2011 season to get back his vintage form and finally got a touch of it by the year end. Federer finished the year with a hat-trick of titles to secure 3000 rankings points, reclaiming the world number three spot from
Andy Murray of Great Britain. The Swiss maestro successfully defended his Swiss Indoors Basel title at home, quickly followed by a championship victory at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. He entered the season ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour
Finals in London, as the fourth seed and went all the way undefeated to claim the prestigious title for a record sixth time to finish the year on an assertive note.
Federer also mentioned the reporter that he will be leading his country in the first round of the Davis Cup tie against the United States on his home soil in the first week of March. The Swiss maestro eyes to clinch a couple of Grand Slam trophies in the
next season to climb up to his desired top spot in the men’s rankings and his fans hope he will succeed in the end.
