Roger Federer faces criticism from Swiss fans and officials – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Roger Federer, is under the woods and the criticism is piling on the Swiss Maestro who is considered to be the guru of the world of tennis. The recent allegations against the 31-year-old Swiss are totally understandable. The tournament
officials of Basel are finding it extremely difficult to keep their superhero intact. Federer who earns 500,000 dollars alongside the prize money is now bidding to play the next edition of his hometown tournament for no less than the tag of 2 million dollars.
However, the allegations are strictly discarded by the Swiss legend who stated that money is not an issue. If he had preferred dollars, he would have chosen to play throughout the tour of Asia but he preferred to play at his home soil. The criticism gathered
pace after the Swiss star failed to hang on to his title at Basel and lost the former US Open Champion, Juan Martin Del Potro. It is tough time for the legendary tennis icon but the real story is yet to be unleashed.
Federer stated, “If I was running only after money, I would have made many other decisions, played throughout Asia. I have always given priority to Basel. I have already helped the tournament a lot. Because of that the onus is more on (Brennwald) than on
me.”
Another thing that is bothering the Swiss tennis fanatics is the performance of Federer in the Davis Cup. They claim that he talks about nation’s pride all the time but hardly features in the Davis Cup ties which is increasingly annoying for the home crowd.
Basel is such a tournament that receives a whole lot of sponsorship and viewership just because the big name of Federer is included in the draws. If he will not take part, the worth of the middle-level tournament will fall below the required standards and
Switzerland might be deprived of a most-wanted tennis event.
Commenting about Davis Cup, Stanislas Wawrinka who is the second best player from Switzerland stated about his compatriot, “I really can't understand him.” The Swiss daily Tages Anzeiger quoted, “On the court he plays like he is out of this world, but outside
he is more earthly than we would like to admit; somewhat imperfect and very human.” Marco Chiudinelli, the third best Swiss player stated about Federer, “I don't think we can convince him.”
It is high time for Federer to stand up to the criticism and reply his fans.
