Roger Federer gears-up for 2011 Australian Open
Currently ranked number two in the world, Switzerland's Roger Federer could not have ended the 2010 season in a better way. The professional bagged his fifth season ending title, in London, defeating Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the 2010 Association of Tennis Professionals Finals. Additionally, Roger spoke to the press in regard of his Australian Open title defense. He stated,
“Look, the goal is obviously not to lose first round, but trying to win it again. I like the pressure of being defending champion. The memories for me back in Australia are very emotional, very nice. I love playing there. I’m excited starting in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, gearing-up for the new season. Looking forward to some rest and practice too. I’m sure I’m going to play well. That never guarantees success. But I’m sure that the confidence I took away from this tournament could help down the stretch. And beating fellow top-10 players could always have some mental play at some stage of the season. So there are many positives to take out of this tournament.”
With defending champion, Rafael Nadal, out of the way with a knee injury at the 2010 Australian Open, Roger clinched the Men's singles title, defeating Britain's Andy Murray 6-3 in the first set, 6-4 in the second set and 7-6 in the deciding third set. In the year 2007, Federer went head-to-head with Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, in the final of the Australian Open. The Swiss got off to a good start, taking the first set 7-6. Furthermore, Roger went on to take the both the second and third set, 6-4,to bag the championship title. A year earlier, Roger annihilated Marcos Baghdatis, defeating him 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 and 6-2 to take the 2006 Australian Open Men's singles title. Additionally, in the year 2004, the professional battled it out against Marat Safin of Russia, at the Australian Open. Marat was beaten 6-7, 4-6 and 6-2, marking a straight set wins for Federer, who bagged the title based upon his win in the last set. Furthermore, in spite of the fact that Federer did not fare well in terms of grand slams in the year 2010, the Swiss ended the season on a good note and seems to be focused on attempting a title defense, as far as the 2011 Australian Open is concerned.
